Design approach
With a proven track record of innovative land use and award-winning designs, our design teams work to unlock the full potential of every site.
We approach every project with creativity, commercial insight, and social purpose, ensuring budgets are used wisely and projects deliver meaningful impact. This way we can focus on key issues at the right level of detail early on.
Our strength lies in seamlessly integrating socially beneficial elements that not only support planning but also enhance the lives of the people who use the buildings we design.
We see design as a collaborative process. While senior designers guide the direction, every team member is encouraged to explore new possibilities, bringing fresh ideas to each project.
Our robust review process ensures quality and innovation at every stage. A dedicated design review panel meets weekly to critique ongoing work, while our "sounding wall" invites input from the entire office on emerging designs. These collaborative efforts, grounded in clear principles and teamwork, keep us on track and consistently deliver exceptional results.
How we work
Our large pool of design, technical and support staff allows us to deliver a wide range of projects with demanding programmes.
Our partners Patrick Devlin, Dominique Oliver, Kaye Stout, Carl Vann, and Justin Laskin shape our creative output and business strategy. They lead three design workshops focusing on residential and mixed-use work and incorporate our BTR and Later Living teams.
The Knowledge Hub, led by partner Roger Holdsworth, supported by heads of sustainability, BIM, and technical audit, provides guidance and quality control across creative, technical, planning, and procedural challenges.
The practice is supported by our finance partner Mary McDonnell and senior managers, whose teams cover all our business functions: information systems, finance, human resources, premises and administration.
Our Communications Group led by partner Tim Metcalfe, produces reports, submissions, and consultation materials, along with bespoke publishing and branding services for the practice and our clients.
Former AJ editor and Open House London director Rory Olcayto, our in-house writer and critic, supports partners in shaping our design vision and media profile.
