Working at PTE

At Pollard Thomas Edwards, we attract talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, inspired by our exciting projects and a workplace rooted in genuine equality and allyship.

We have a strong tradition of supporting women and fostering a welcoming community for LGBT+ colleagues. Diversity is at the core of how we work, enabling us to create truly inclusive places and communities.

Many of our team members stay with us throughout their careers, and a significant number return after gaining experience elsewhere. This loyalty is driven by the meaningful work we do, our collaborative approach, and the friendly environment we maintain.

While we offer flexible working options, our beautiful canal-side studios at Diespeker Wharf in Angel, Islington, are at the heart of our identity. We converted the Victorian timber mill in the ’90s, earning a Civic Trust commendation in 2000 for its restoration.

A recent “better than home” retrofit has created a welcoming workplace designed for flexible working and social activity, featuring model-making and collaboration tables, a basement kitchen-bar, and an events space. The open-plan studio includes several meeting rooms, which also allow for private calls or study.

Our workplace inspires genuine well-being. Our courtyard, with tables and parasols, and our multi-award-winning garden serve as both a social hub and a soothing green space to enjoy in all seasons, alone or with colleagues.

I enjoy the working environment at PTE. Despite being a busy practice, it is not a stressful place nor do I feel the pressure of having to take work home at the end of the day. I enjoy coming into work because there is a healthy work life balance here. The office is in a fantastic location, right by the canal, with plenty of places to enjoy a good lunch.

The design process is inclusive. Everyone’s opinion is valid and listened to - with staff encouraged to think and help shape how we operate as a business.

History

Roger Pollard, Bill Thomas, and John Edwards founded our practice in 1974 to provide an alternative to post-war modernist design. From the outset, we have focused on what building users truly want, transforming redundant sites and creating architecture that respects its surroundings.

The founders believed that good design, smart use of resources, and a commitment to social and environmental change make property development a force for good. This approach continues to shape our core values today.

Collaborations

We thrive in collaboration, whether working closely with clients, contractors and the end-users of the buildings we design, at New Ground for example, or as part of a multi-practice design team to work on large-scale, wide-ranging briefs, like Knights Park, Eddington in Cambridge.
